Nantes player Hadjam was dropped by the coach from the team for remaining fast

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Nantes player Jaouen Hadjam was dropped from the squad to face Reims in the 2022/2023 French League match because the player chose to continue fasting for Ramadan.

Nantes coach Antoine Kombouare crossed Hadjam from the list of players to face Reims on Sunday (2/4).

Kombouare said he had dropped Hadjam from the squad against Reims because the player refused to go without fasting.

“I met them (Muslim players). We discussed. We worked together so that everything went well and it often happens. There are matches at the weekend, the players are asked to win,” Kambouare was quoted as saying by RMC Sport when talking about Hadjam’s absence in the team against Reims.

Kambouare is known to be vocal about his attitude towards Muslim players who fast during Ramadan.

When handling PSG in 2009, Kambouare also banned Muslim players from fasting during matches.

“I have very simple rules. It’s okay for players to fast during Ramadan for a week. But on matchdays, it’s prohibited,” Kambouare said as quoted by Sportbible.

“Those who observe the Ramadan fast on matchdays will stay at home. I’m not going to harm the players’ health, or trouble their teammates. When you don’t eat all day it becomes complicated,” Kambouare added.

Meanwhile, in the Nantes vs Reims match on Sunday (2/4) night, Kambouare’s team finally lost with a landslide score of 0-3.
