BMKG: Flores Back Arc Fault Caused the M 5.8 Bima Earthquake in West Nusa Tenggara

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that the cause of the earthquake that occurred in Bima City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) was the Flores Back Arc Fault.

“The earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to the activity of the Flores Back Arc Thrust,” said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, Sunday (2/4).

The Flores Back Arc Up fault is a fault that extends from the North Sea of ​​Flores to the North Sea of ​​Lombok.

He further explained the results of the analysis of the source mechanism, earthquakes have a horizontal-up movement mechanism, aka oblique thrust.

The results of the BMKG analysis showed that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 7.84° South Latitude; 118.74° East, or to be precise, located in the sea at a distance of 67 kilometers northeast of Bima City, West Nusa Tenggara at a depth of 30 kilometers.

Daryono explained that the impact of this earthquake in the Bima area was on the MMI III – IV intensity scale, or the vibration was felt in the house as if a truck had passed.

As of 15.55 WIB, the BMKG monitoring results showed that there had been one aftershock activity.

Previously, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 that occurred in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) at around 15.04 WIB with a depth of 29 km northwest, was felt as far as Makassar City, South Sulawesi.

BMKG noted that the Bima earthquake was also felt in Dompu, Sumbawa Besar, West Sumbawa, Mataram and Makassar. Apart from Makassar, the tremors of the earthquake were also felt in a number of districts in South Sulawesi.
