Komnas HAM does not want hundreds of KPPS officers to die again in 2024

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) does not want the cases of the deaths of 894 Voting Organizing Group (KPPS) officers in the 2019 election to be repeated in the 2024 election.

Komnas HAM Commissioner for Studies and Research, Saurlin P Siagian, said that his party also recommended several things to election organizers or the General Elections Commission (KPU).

“We recommend election organizers to create a scenario so that the same incident does not happen. Scenario to avoid the occurrence of the same victims in 2019,” said Saurlin in Surabaya, Saturday (1/4).

Moreover, the workload on the 2024 election has the potential to increase, because it is held simultaneously. This makes the committee have to work harder and marathon.

“Maybe preparing such as health insurance, how to adequately administer, sufficient human resources, and also from a health perspective,” he said.

According to Saurlin, the deaths of 894 KPPS officers in the 2019 elections were also caused by a number of factors, for example, congenital diseases and age.

Therefore, according to him, the recruitment process must be carried out by taking into account age restrictions, medical history and others.

“The occurrence of this event is also related to congenital diseases, so it requires that during the selection, a health check must be carried out from the organizers, and also from an age perspective, so the age limit is set,” he said.

This has been conveyed by Komnas HAM. And in principle the KPU, said Saurlin, has also thought about these things. Among them are the rules and age restrictions and the health of the organizing committee.

“It needs to be prepared comprehensively,” he concluded.
