The Ramadan of the Shahrim, may God bless you, will be overwhelmed by his fast.

It means: “The month of Ramadhan has come, a month full of blessings, so God obliges you to fast in that month, at that time the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of hell are closed, the devils are bound and in that month there is one night that is more valuable better than a thousand months,” (HR. The following are the virtues of the month of Ramadan, summarized from various sources.

1. Month of the Quran

Muslims can read more Al Quran during the holy month of Ramadan. Reading the Quran at night in the month of Ramadan will intercede for those who do it later on the Day of Judgment.

The Prophet SAW said:

Meaning: “Fasting and reading the Quran will provide intercession for a servant on the Day of Judgment. Fasting says: ‘O Lord, I prevent him from eating and drinking during the day’ ِAl Qur’an also says: ‘I prevent him from sleeping at night, then we are interceding for him’. He said: ‘So both of them are allowed to intercede’,” (HR Ahmad).

2. The month of patience

The next priority of Ramadan is the month of patience. Muslims are required to fast during the month of Ramadan.

However, this fast does not only hold back hunger and thirst, but also all other passions, including anger.

3. Month of blessings

Ramadan is also mentioned in the hadith as a month full of blessings. As the hadith of Abu Hurairah RA said, the Prophet SAW said:

“The month of Ramadan has come to you, a month full of blessings. Allah SWT has made it obligatory for you to fast in it.

In that month the gates of heaven will be opened and the gates of hell will be closed, in that month the devils will be bound, in that month there will be a night better than a thousand months, whoever is prevented from obtaining its goodness, he has indeed been prevented.” (HR An Nasa’i)

4. The opening of heaven’s door

The importance of the month of Ramadan is further mentioned in a hadith from Abu Hurairah RA:

When Ramadan begins, the devils are chained up, the gates of Paradise are opened, and the gates of Hell are closed.

Meaning: “When the (month) of Ramadan comes, the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of hell are closed and the devils are shackled.” (HR Bukhari and Muslim)

5. There is the night of Lailatul Qadr

Mentioned in surah Al Qadr, the night of Lailatul Qadr is a night better than a thousand months. Allah SWT says in Surah Al Qadr verses 1-5:

“Indeed, We have sent down (Al Quran) on Lailatul Qadr. And do you know what that Lailatul Qadr is? Lailatul Qadr is better than a thousand months. On that night the angels and the Spirit (Jibril) descend with the permission of their Lord to arrange all affairs. Be prosperous (that night) until dawn.”

Explained in the Book of Riyadhus Shalihin by Imam An-Nawawi, the Prophet SAW said, “Whoever prays on Lailatul Qadr out of faith and only hopes for a reward from God, his past sins will be forgiven.” (Muttafaq Alaih).

6. There is a mustajab prayer

Shaykh Rabi’ Abdurrauf Az-Zawawi said, another priority of the month of Ramadan is that there is a mustajab prayer in it. We can get closer to Allah SWT one of them by praying.

7. The month of forgiveness

Another virtue of the month of Ramadan is that past sins will also be forgiven as mentioned in this hadith.

“Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and ihtisab, his past sins have been forgiven. And whoever wakes up on the night of Qadr with faith and ihtisab, his past sins have been forgiven.” (HR Bukhari Muslim)

In addition, from Abu Hurairah RA that Rasulullah SAW said, “Praying five times and Friday to Friday, Ramadan, to the next Ramadan erases (a person’s) sins between these times as long as he stays away from big sins.” (Muslim HR)

8. Month of sharing

Muslims are required to fulfill one of the pillars of Islam, namely zakat in the month of Ramadan. Apart from zakat, we can also increase alms and infaq during this month.

9. The month of Umrah

People who perform Umrah in the month of Ramadhan get the same reward as performing Hajj.

The Prophet SAW said:

Umrah in Ramadan is a pilgrimage

Meaning: “Indeed, Umrah in the month of Ramadan is equal to the reward of Hajj,” (HR Bukhari).

Shaykh Rabi’ Abdurrauf Az-Zawawi said the reward of Umrah in the month of Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj with the Prophet SAW.

That is a number of the priorities of the month of Ramadan. Let’s increase charity and worship in this holy month.
