The German racer retired from the world championship at the end of 2019. But this year, he returned as a KTM test rider.

He had to appear again in front of the screen because Pol Espargaro was absent for a long time due to serious injuries to his jaw, spine and bruises on his chest. The former Honda racer recently completed jaw surgery.

The recovery process is expected to take months, before being able to get on the motorbike.

Following the injury, GasGas Tech3 announced that they would not be replacing Pol in Argentina as a tribute. However, Herve Poncharal’s team did not want to wait long.

Folger is the best option right now to fill the empty slot. He will return to the arena in Austin, Texas, in two weeks.

“The GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 team is counting down the days until Pol Espargaro is ready to return to riding his RC16, but in the meantime, starting with the Grand Prix of the Americas at COTA in mid-April, the team and brand will be able to rely on the speed and experience of the former winner. MotoGP podium, Jonas Folger,” the French team said in a statement.

“The 29-year-old German will be making his first MotoGP appearance since 2017 and has since taken up the role as an official test rider. Jonas previously represented the Tech3 team (Yamaha) and achieved a thrilling second place at his home Grand Prix (Germany) – so he knows the crew and culture there.

“Pol Espargaro went to Barcelona last weekend, where he underwent jaw surgery. The operation took place on Tuesday at the Dexeus Hospital. He will remain under observation for a few days and hopes to return home soon, where he will be able to intensify the physiotherapy and work out a schedule for back to driving.”

In response to his comeback in the United States, Folger expressed, “First of all, I wish Pol well and a speedy recovery. I’m sure he has the right people around him.

“I can’t wait to get back racing and go to Texas to meet all my old team mates. I hope we can do a good job and I know it’s going to be a big challenge for me because testing has just started.

“However, it will be a good opportunity to increase the pace and learn more about the bike. I’m grateful and now I can’t wait for Texas,” added Folger, who has driven the RC16 only a handful of times since becoming a KTM tester this year.
