“The objective target is to prepare the Indonesian national team to appear at the U20 World Cup in 2021, where Indonesia will be the host,” said PSSI chairman at the time, Mochamad Iriawan.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 U-20 World Cup was cancelled. However, Indonesia then continued to receive host status for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

During his journey, Shin Tae Yong then handled the national team for the 2022 World Cup Qualification, AFF Cup, and also the SEA Games. However, Shin Tae Yong has never forgotten the big mission of preparing the U-20 Indonesian National Team for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

Because of that, he continues to make efforts to make selections, hold training camps, and also monitor the names of players of Indonesian descent who can be naturalized.

In an effort to hold a training camp, Shin Tae Yong also argued several times with the club. Meanwhile, in the naturalization process, Shin Tae Yong received three names, namely Justin Hubner, Ivar Jenner, and Rafael Struick.

With preparations full of obstacles, including the naturalization process for the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup that has not been completed, Shin Tae Yong and the coaching staff continue to try to sharpen the team.

Even though the strength is not 100 percent, the U-20 Indonesian National Team is considered capable of performing quite well at the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup. This has become Shin Tae Yong’s capital for the final preparations for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

But in fact Shin Tae Yong’s hopes of leading the U-20 Indonesian National Team to compete in the 2023 U-20 World Cup were dashed. Host status for Indonesia at the 2023 U-20 World Cup was revoked by FIFA on Wednesday (29/3).
