MotoGP: Mir admits that lowering tire temperatures hinders his performance

The 2020 MotoGP world champion had to adapt again to a different motorbike after four years strengthening Suzuki. During pre-season, he couldn’t do long race simulations or practice because he had to test a lot of components on the new bike

On Saturday at Portimao, the inaugural Sprint Race in history, which was scheduled for 12 laps, Mir crashed in the early laps. For the first time, he had more than ten consecutive laps on the Honda in Sunday’s race.

The Spaniard also had a long lap penalty due to contact with Fabio Quartararo during the Sprint Race.

Mir explained about the problems that prevented him from finishing in a better order.

“We had a problem with the (front) tire temperature, it got very hot,” he explained. “He’s been hot since lap 5. It’s never happened to me before but hey, that’s racing, you have to gain experience.

Mir didn’t look for excuses, but he felt imprisoned because he couldn’t do a simulation by taking a long distance before starting the race.

“That’s the problem with the new bike. In training I felt very good with the rear and the grip increased. I was able to do good times with the old tyre,” he explained.

“But it is clear that when you do more laps you have a slipstream and a lot of things can happen. And once a certain temperature is reached, the rubber doesn’t work and neither does the bike.”

Finishing the race ahead of Mir was Alex Rins, his former Suzuki and now LCR-Honda team-mate Alex Marquez, who is also making his debut on a new bike, the Ducati Desmosedici, after three years on the RC213V. Miguel Oliveira, who made his debut with Aprilia, showed extraordinary performance until he was finally dropped by Marc Marquez.

“Although Miguel and Alex (Marquez) have changed bikes this year, it’s not comparable, because they have bikes that have won the World Championship recently or won races, they are very improved bikes,” he said.

“We, on the other hand, use a bike that is still new and hasn’t evolved yet. I already knew that these riders would go really fast. We are working to have a more competitive bike in the future.”

Mir crossed the line 16.992 seconds behind the winner, Pecco Bagnaia, but taking into account that he completed the long lap penalty, which took two seconds, the gap is slightly less.

“We finished 15 seconds behind the first, but from the way I saw myself, how the race went and the bad feeling I had with the bike and the tyres. I still found a little difference. I know there is a lot of room for improvement. I’m trying to optimistic,” he said.

The question is whether this room for improvement is real or whether the option for Honda to work is utopian.

“Fix this? This is a setup issue. We’ve been following development directions and this issue was created, but I know that this is something that could easily be resolved by tweaking the set-up a bit,” he responded regarding the overheat.

Unlike the Sprint Race, where he fell when he had just started the race, Mir was able to finish Sunday’s race.

“It was a completely different race from Saturday, in the first lap I was already eighth or ninth. Had I not had any problems with the tyres, I think I could have competed in the group I was expecting to fight, given the rhythm we had, ” he said.
