Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Marc Marquez admits he made a big mistake and deserved a penalty after crashing into Miguel Oliveira at the 2023 Portugal MotoGP.
“I have said it personally, but I want to apologize again to him, to his team, also to the fans,” said Marquez as quoted by Crash.
“I have been punished for this mistake with a double long lap penalty, which I fully accept,” continued Marquez.
This incident occurred due to Marquez’s aggressive race since the start of the race at the Algarve Circuit, Sunday (26/3). The Baby Alien was so eager to push forward after being passed by several other racers.
Marquez, who was going fast, lost his balance before entering the third corner. He first nudged Jorge Martin who survived the accident.
However, the motorbike that Marquez was riding on continued to slide and crashed into Oliveira’s motorbike, which was in the middle of a corner. Both racers fell and were unable to continue the race.
Marquez reportedly suffered a metacarpal fracture in his right hand. He will be rushed to Dexeus Hospital in Barcelona, Spain.
“I have several injuries, including my hands and knees. We need to carry out further tests. However, my current situation is not the most important thing,” he said.
“To be honest, I’m not worried about preparing for the race in Argentina. The most important thing today is that Miguel (Oliveira) is fine. Because I made a big mistake at the third corner and this incident affected everything,” said Marquez.
The 2023 Portugal MotoGP was won by Francesco Bagnaia who appeared impressive. While the second and third positions are occupied by Maverick Vinales and Marco Bezzecchi.
