The increase in passengers occurred on the Singapore and Malaysia routes.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SIDOARJO — The number of passengers at Juanda International Airport, East Java, increased by 96 percent during the period from January to the third week of September 2022 compared to the previous year. General Manager of Juanda International Airport, Sisyani Jaffar in a press statement, Friday (23/9/2022), said the increase had reached 96 percent in passenger movements from a total of 3,798,298 in 2021 to 7,429,173 in 2022.
“With an average of 30,000 passengers per day,” he said.
He added, the increase in aircraft movements reached 40 percent from a total of 38,512 in 2021 to 53,969 in 2022 or an average of 200 aircraft movements every day. He said international flight traffic at Juanda International Airport increased after hajj flights.
“Passengers are not only dominated by Umrah pilgrims, but also passengers on Southeast Asian routes such as Singapore and Malaysia,” he said.
Based on flight traffic data until August, he said, Singapore was still the destination with the highest number of passengers, namely 125,000 passengers or dominated 36 percent of the total international passengers served by Juanda International Airport in 2022, with 348,000 passengers. “This situation seems to be one of the considerations for Batik Air to open an international flight route from Juanda International Airport to Changi International Airport in Singapore,” he said.
He said the presence of Batik Air on the Surabaya – Singapore flight route added to the ranks of airlines that had served this route from the previous ones, namely Singapore Airlines, Scoot Tiger, and Jet Star. “The opening of this route is expected to be able to stimulate the aviation industry to revive and as an effort to revive the economy and tourism of East Java,” he said.
