Indonesian local food commodities must be encouraged to enter the international market
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) encourages the increase in national peanut production and exports. Minister of Agriculture, Syahrul Yasin Limpo (Mentan SYL), said the effort was to improve food security and the national economy by utilizing large agricultural resources.
Syahrul said that Indonesia’s local food commodities should be encouraged to enter international consumption markets. Therefore, local food must be prepared and introduced properly so that it can attract the attention of the export market.
“This is what the president expects, which is to carry out maximum regularity. SYL added that the development of peanut cultivation must also be realized with an integrated agricultural concept so that it does not only produce peanuts but also encourages increased production of other commodities.
This is an effort to increase farmers’ income or welfare through optimal utilization of existing agricultural potential.
“We will apply technology, farmers not only plant peanuts but can also insert soybean and corn plants and others that will harvest alternately in one stretch so that the stagnation of community economic activity can be minimized,” he explained.
Director General of Food Crops, Ministry of Agriculture, Kelvin, added that in order to strengthen macroeconomic growth Ministry of Agriculture support local food diversification efforts to meet food needs, improve community food security and make peanuts a mainstay export commodity.
