The US froze the assets of Afghanistan’s central bank worth more than 9 billion US dollars.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TEHRAN – Minister of Foreign Affairs Iran Hossein Amirabdollahian calls on the United States (US) to disburse set Afghanistan frozen after Taliban regain control of the country. Currently Afghanistan is known to be facing a humanitarian crisis.
“Afghan assets blocked by America should be used for humanitarian purposes and improving conditions in Afghanistan,” said Amirabdollahian after meeting Taliban Foreign Minister Amiran Khan Mutaqqi in Tehran, Monday (10/1/2022).
After the Taliban seized power in August last year, Washington is known to freeze reserve assets central bank Afghanistan worth more than 9 billion US dollars. “The brave fighting of the Afghan nation has shown that no foreign power can occupy Afghanistan and rule there,” said Amirabdollahian.
Despite Amirabdollahian meeting with Mutaqqi, Iran has not officially recognized the Taliban’s rule over Afghanistan. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has called for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan. According to him, it is important for the people there not to feel that Afghanistan belongs to only one group or class. “All our efforts are for a government in Afghanistan where people feel they belong to all groups and ethnicities in Afghanistan and ensure peace in the country,” Raisi said on December 30 last year.
He stressed that insecurity in Afghanistan could have an impact on Iran. Regarding this, Raisi praised groups in Afghanistan such as Haidarioun, Zaynabiun, and Fitimiyun militants, who are fighting ISIS. He assessed that ISIS and other extremist groups still in Afghanistan have the aim of preventing peace and security in the country.
Raisi said that currently nearly 4 million Afghans live in Iran. They mingle and live side by side with Iranian society. Since retaking Afghanistan in mid-August, the Taliban have shown no signs of forming an inclusive government.
In the current Taliban government, all ranks of his cabinet are members of them. There are also several figures who are loyalists of the Taliban. Not only inclusivity in government, the Taliban has also not fulfilled its promise regarding the fulfillment of the rights of Afghan women, especially in the fields of education and political representation.
