France — What happens if someone is paid a lot of money just to taste a new car that is very expensive and already belongs to the consumer? It’s certainly like a dream, right?
But in fact not for Steve Jenny who has long been a test driver for a new car for the French automotive company, Bugatti. The man who grew up in the Alsace region, France, has been a Bugatti test driver since 2004.
He claimed to have driven 90% of Bugatti cars, from the Veyron, Chiron, to the Divo. In total, Steve has tested the Bugatti unit as far as 217,000 miles or the equivalent of 350 thousand km.
Bugatti also chose Steve not without reason. The reason is that the man used to be a rally racer, co-driver, to mechanic and quality control for aftermarket manufacturers Mahle and BBS near the Bugatti factory.
According to Motor Authority, being a test driver at Bugatti was only a dream. But in 2004 the opportunity arose and he did not waste the offer given by Bugatti.
Steve’s main job is to test cars that have been ordered by consumers so that none of the components malfunction, so that the units received by consumers are free from damage.
Each car tested must pass a distance of 300 km. The test consists of a test of the engine, suspension, transmission, handling, and braking system.
In fact, he also did a hard braking test on a straight track from a closed airport. The car being tested must be able to brake while traveling at a speed of 200 km/hour without any disturbance from the components.
After all the testing was done, Steve returned to the factory and provided input to the mechanic what parts were lacking to be repaired immediately. After that, the engine oil, transmission oil, tires, and undercarriage of each tested car will be replaced with new ones.
After all is done, the car will be tested again within 1 hour before actually being sent to consumers. At least it aims so that consumers do not get units that have manufacturing defects.
The job of being a Bugatti test driver like Steve seems to be one of the dream jobs for car enthusiasts around the world, right?
